The office bearers of Nyanza cricket will have a meeting; the agenda is to spread the gentleman’s game allover the province, following the success in the inaugural tourney.
They are reaching out to more schools and clubs to take up cricket. They will discuss the possibility of having a league to further popularize the sport, organizing cricket competitions and leagues amongst the youths is most important if the game has to thrive in this region. Although Nyanza participates in the Wool mart league played in Nakuru, it is important that they have a competition of their own.
The other three core provinces have their own individual leagues.
Nairobi led the way amongst the three core provincial competitions with the 50-over league. The Coast and Rift Valley has preferred the 40-over competition.
Also Twenty20 tournaments are played over in all three provinces.
To produce good quality players, they have to play on turf wickets and quality outfields.
Nairobi’s grounds were developed for the 1994 ICC trophy; however this left a big gap in playing standards between Nairobi and other centers.
When “Cricket Kenya” took over they understood the importance of spreading the game and made this their top priority.
In 2006 the Mombasa Sports Club (MSC) was brought to international standards.
2007 saw three grounds in Nairobi getting a further uplift for the WCL.
When Kenya was awarded rights to host the 2010 under 19, Cricket World Cup “CK” saw the opportunity to spread interest in the game and elevate the country into a true cricket destination so more venues were developed across three towns of Kenya. Although in resent months the National teams’ showing has dipped on the field, off the field “Cricket Kenya” has done everything in its capacity to spread the game.
These topnotch facilities in Mombasa and Nakuru have helped their players to bridge the gap between them and Nairobi and compete with them. Both will have a team each in the “East African Premier League” as they have the venues to host these high profile games.
